History

At some point in time all Island nations have used canoes or waka ama (outrigger canoes) for transport, food gathering and recreation.

Historically, the Pacific is home to the greatest navigators in open canoes.

Waka ama has been recognised as one of the fastest growing aquatic sports in Aotearoa/New Zealand since the World Sprint Championship held in Auckland in 1990, and the more recent Championship held in 2006 at Lake Karapiro raised its profile.

Today, waka ama is a safe and exciting water activity for all ages. It promotes teamwork, leadership, cultural awareness, physical fitness, water safety, healthy competition and much more. Waka ama enhances the hauora: our physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing and balance.

Hemi Vincent and others established the Motueka Waka Ama Club (MWAC) in 1996. We have a strong core membership of adult paddlers of all ages, cultures and fitness levels. Encouraging rangatahi (youth) involvement is important to the Club. We also endeavour to coach and encourage new members.
